on my youth hunt in 37b this year we were trying to spot a 4x4 muley we had seen at dark the day before, it was the last day of the hunt so we stayed out all day but at last light my uncle glassed up this coues at 700 we got closer and i shot him at 550, a coues was not expected but i can’t complain it’s pretty good buck.

Alright, its been alluded to on another post so figured I might as well let it rip here. My 15 yo son has the one sheep tag for 37B. The odds to get the tag are ridiculous and I don’t want to even pretend it’s fair. But he is also a hard working student athlete who sacrifices a lot for his goals. I want him to be successful. We have found a few rams and one solid one we hope to reconnect with. But his time will be limited as he has school and practice everyday until 12/20 and then he has practice everyday except Christmas Eve and Christmas. So we are going to hit it hard on weekends until school gets out and then see how much practice he thinks he can get away with missing. If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a sheep hunt, this might be your chance. If you would like to team up and help glass on 12/1 (opening day, Sunday after Thanksgiving), shoot me a message and we will coordinate. We plan to put out as many eyes as we can to try and turn up a ram and see if we can get him killed. The unit is huge and pretty remote with sheep spread out all over. So trying to figure out where they are is the biggest challenge. Then waiting for them to be in a spot where you can get to them is the next challenge. Then execute an effective long range shot. This is no cake walk. You’ll need your own transportation and glass. If we have a spare radio we will loan you one, but cell service is pretty good in a lot of that country. It would be awesome if guys were comfortable evaluating sheep. The plan is to get as many eyes out locating on the first to see if we can turn up something good and then put together a plan to kill him. If it doesn’t work out, we’ll try again the next weekend. Rinse and repeat until school gets out. Thanks to those who have already reached out and those who want to participate. I think this could be really cool.

BTW: I check 594 lbs of meat to Casey's Processing, no ribs, hooves or spine only leg bones present. "Dave's" bull scored 122" B&C. I am very fortunate to have been able to share camp with accomplished hunters and persons like the "Slone" family. This has been truly a "Once and a Life Time" experience for me. I would not change a thing about the approach except......... I wish I had more time around the camp with these fellas! Can not say enough about Dean and his efforts while Mark and I monitored our locations. Here is Mark's nice bull as well! Congrats to Mark for his steady perseverance for 30 days!

Unlike my sons tag 2 weeks ago which was in the 100’s, I was so looking forward to this weeks much cooler temps. Even though he filled his tag first thing Friday morning I knew there were some bucks in the area from past scouting trips and I knew it was going to be a great hunt. I get out there just before sun up and by god it was really cold….I start glassing thinking these bucks are just gonna be out and about sunning themselves. Not the case, I find 1 doe at 7:30 and two more around 8ish. My eyes are bleeding glassing these hills and canyons and nothing is turning up. Around 10:00 I start to nod off, I crawl to the top of the hill I’m glassing from and look at the back of my eyelids….. nice little cat nap. I wake up around 11 totally refreshed and ready to glass the again. From 11-12:15, temperature is absolutely beautiful can’t believe nothing is moving. As I’m slowly scanning an opening underneath a mesquite tree I see something that catches my eye. The antlers move…game on. I focus on them and range the opening at 463 yds. For the next 1/2 hr I hem and haw because all I see is a portion of the antlers which is a 2x. I know there are bigger ones in here, but thinking why not…meat buck, but it’s 463 yds away and the terrain is absolutely awful for a drag out. Well I convince myself this is the one, get set up and squeeze one off. I don’t see the buck, so I get behind my 15’s and see movement further inside the mesquite tree. The buck is still standing. I can’t tell if it’s hit so I get on the gun again and get ready for a second shot. I can see the antlers moving a bit so I get an outline of the body and squeeze another round off. I get behind the 15’s and I see a buck laying on the ground. I let out a heck yeah. Due to the distance and terrain, I leave my rifle and pack and bring a deer drag, tag and knife. As pull the deer from out of the mesquite opening I notice a portion of the antler and it’s right ear has some blood on it. I guess the 1st shot actually hit it just high, not enough to spook him though. Got it back to my other gear and started the long haul out, 2.1 miles to the truck, this deer kicked my butt, but well worth it. Dropped it off at WGP!!!

I didn’t get a tag and neither did my brother so we turned our attention to two of my nephews. I wasn’t able to be out opening day but my brother and his step son got to 150 yards of a heavier antlered 4x4 and he took one shot and dropped him. This was his step son’s first buck. On Sunday, we watched another 4x4 bed down and walked my brother in law and nephew into his bed and my nephew was able to make a great shot and filled his tag. Now, we have 5 adults with tags left to fill. 3 of them are able to hunt the whole time so hopefully they are successful this week. I can’t wait to get back out Friday afternoon and help out. I absolutely love the desert.

My brother in law dropped this guy at 75 yards this morning. Not a giant but he was happy to have him.

I don't have to tread anything. I found an elk and told the hunter where it is. He can do with that what he pleases. He can always mark where it's at and go pick it up in the spring if he wants once it is no longer fresh. (Perfectly legal FYI)

I guessed him at 155ish. He looks like a younger deer with some good potential. Over the last 15 years or so I have killed 3 bucks over 180 within a mile of where I found him.

I'd shoot depending on points and unit. Nice buck.

So we hopped back in my blind for the night hoping to see the mtn lion . No luck ! Did have more turkey come in right where they should have earlier for me . We had birds at 10 to 20 yds . It was some great practice trying to mimic there sounds .They hung around for awhile. Then we had a few cow elk and a small 4x4 come in. I was finally able to get yardage on my shot and was surprised it was over 65 yds . I'm shooting a sx3 12 gage and heavy shot bismuth mixed loads there on the hot side 1450 fps.

Hello everyone, sorry this has take a bit to gather together. I thought I would post some thoughts about the upcoming draw. I did have a great hunt and out of the 3 areas available it worked for me. I partnered up with a friend, Mark Slone, and we did all right! I just wanted to thank everyone who took time and shared information. Your experiences were confirmed. I will be posting a story here and I have submitted pictures with a write up to Hunting Fool magazine. Mark and I had a simple approach to avoid the drama and for the most part it worked. It took me 16 days and Mark, 30 days, to harvest. Dave's rifle did well on both! The hunt itself proved to be a different experience and like nothing I thought it would be. There was no forcing success. Bison are big of which I would have been terribly under resourced with out the help of Mark's brothers, Kevin Wilson and Dean Dunaway. Dean proved to be a consummate professional and remained helpful for over 30 days providing updated information and locations for us to use. Frankly, give Dean a call. I am thankful I don't have to do it again, but I would if I could as I never wanted to shoot out of an enclosure. The GC NPS Enforcement was helpful each time they were called and like AZ GFD very aware of the previous issues during this hunt of which feed back was given. Per GC NPS biologist, another capture is coming up in September. It is my understanding that the goal is to manage the herd at 200 animals and current estimates are 330. Good news for bull hunters is that they are not good candidates for relocation due to size.
