Well we had a blast. The night before opener we found some birds roosted on a easy access point. We woke up at 4am and and we frooze a little opening morning waiting for these birds to fly down. When they hit the ground I wasn't able to call them back. I fought with one bird for 15 minutes or so but he walked off.
We next headed to our plan B spot. I was able to call a single hen in, and then a flock up the hill came to check out my live decoy. Hens and Jake's, no long beards. My older 12 year old boy could have easily taken a shot at a Jake but he waited for his little brother who just took hunters ED/Field day last week. The 10 year old shot and nailed a Jake, but unfortunately my 12 year old had no shot on the other Jakes due to couple hens not giving him a clear shot.
Few hours later we had called in 11 Jake's off in a Canyon, they all came into my bad calling and my 12 year old was able to make a 20 yard shot on one. We were done opening day, we were extremely lucky I would say. Saw some long beards but for the life of me they kept hanging up. Watching my boys reactions and working together was priceless.
EDIT: and thanks to Ammon for your calls, i used your mouth reed, pot, and box calls.
