The Dragon Bravo fire began as a small lightning caused fire within a few miles of the historical lodge on the north rim of the Grand Canyon and has grown to a 112,000 acre monster on the North Kaibab. Earlier this week, I went to the south rim to observe and photograph the fire for a few days. Intense fire formed a dramatic pyrocumulus cloud. Smoke settled into the canyon each night. The scenes were dramatic, beautiful, saddening, maddening and depressing to me- a mix of emotions.

I have bought my last 2 trucks at Henry Brown and deal directly with Ben Brown. He is the fleet manager (also Henry Browns grandson) and I skip all the sales crap. I don't know that I got the very best deal out there but I feel happy.

I put a high quality 6x on my dad's 35whelan and hunted elk with it in NM. Never felt under or over scoped but also everything was inside of 200 yds.

I shot a 6x fixed burris on my hunting rifle for a couple of years when I was younger and it worked great. If you like simple I think its a great option.

Great truck, I can tell you for a fact this truck never pulled anything heavy for the first 121k miles. I drove it to Winslow back and forth, thats how I racked up the miles. I bought it new with the intentions of pulling a camper and never ended up buying one. This truck never had any problems and I always changed the oil every 5k miles. The only reason I sold it is that I have 5 kids and needed something with more room for everyone.

My 72 yo buddy drew archery antelope last year in 4b. He made a decoy from 1/4" plywood. I teased him about it...but ended up carrying it for him, for miles. We had a blast. We were stalking bucks every day. Primarily this guy (pic). The first time we had an opportunity to deploy the "decoy", that buck left his 4 does and came running on a string, from 375 yrds, up the hill we were on. It surprised us when he appeared 80 yards away. My buddy couldn't get on him quick enough...and a bit out of his range. That buck wasn't fooled again after that.

Op asks to use a decoy, he receives everyone’s 2 cents

Spot, stalk, repeat. I have had 19a archery 3x in the last 20 years. Each year, more access was removed due to new laws or housing encroachment. Simple hunt strategy. Literally, spot, stalk and if you blow it, get back in the pickup, cool off while looking for your next stalking opportunity. Wear snake gaiters, as there were snakes on all my hunts.

The issue I had in 5b on the archery hunt was the bucks with does would be very receptive to a decoy and begin moving to me but a Doe would jail brake and the buck would circle her up and forget about me. bachelor herds would pay me no mind . a single buck would come but the wind was so swirly I’d get busted

You are in for a super fun, super frustrating hunt! Lots of antelope and some great tanks still available on public or accessible land. For archery I’d definitely advise focusing on water and get yourself a good battery powered fan because it is like sitting in an oven that time of year in a ground blind. decoys can work but it’s about 50/50 in my experience. If you use one don’t walk straight at them. Walk at a 45 degree angle then switch directions doing the same. Sounds like you’ve done some great research, but I have helped on hunts up there a lot over the years so shoot me a message if you have any questions.

Check pricing with Dave Smith Motors, Kellogg, ID. Fly in to Spokane, and their shuttle will pick you up and take you to the dealership, about 40 min. away. Conduct the transaction, then enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way back to AZ - either through Missoula, or through Lewiston. If you go through Lewiston, the Jack O'Connor Hunting Heritage and Education Center is a must-see for anyone who is remotely interested in hunting, fine guns, world-class taxidermy, and some of the memorabilia of the Dean of Outdoor Writers. Last but not least, you can stop at the casinos on the way home (Jackpot, Wells, Ely, Las Vegas).
