6 pointsMy niece had her 3rd and final youth cow hunt this weekend. We started off with a great honey hole tip from my buddy but unfortunately was an off-morning for the local heard...no elk. Beautiful spot with a beautiful sunrise view so definitely a successful morning regardless. Evening hunt we decided to drive and glass our way into a good area where we always see elk. on the way in we spotted a lone cow across a canyon and set up. 520yds facing west with the sun DIRECTLY behind the ridge. Horrible look. we moved down the road a bit and gained about 70 yds for a 450yd set up. Still bad sun but doable. We sat on it for about 45 min waiting for the sun to go behind the peak. 5 min before the sun dipped the elk decided to move. Neice said she was good and had a clean shot and took it. This young lady is ice cold. Zero nerves. Number 3 down after less than 20yd. 260ai built by axis works with massive input and help from Lance. Thanks again my friend. She loves it! aand a HUGE thanks to my little buddy mattman for being a human mule and savi g this old mans life. blue haired assassin has yet to miss when shooting at elk. 2020 480yds 2022 530 yds 2024 450 yds

3 pointsDid anyone catch the aurora last Thursday night? Also, a comet should be visible about 45 minutes after sunset low above the horizon looking west southwest the next few evenings. It should be visible with the naked eye, but binos would help.

3 pointsHis dad just passed away a mouth ago and was supposed to be there. JJ "tag holder"decided this hunt was for his dad and wanted to go ahead and go. We all thank God on how everything played out. Wasn't a easy hunt and 102 degree temp midday Wasn't ideal for kid's.

2 pointsAfter a couple missed opportunities Friday and Saturday, a buddy’s son spotted this guy bedded at 288 yards. My son decided it was the deer for him and the rest is history. Fantastic hunt and experience. Couldn’t be prouder

2 pointsWhat do all figure it will score? Not that score is important but this kid really deserved this buck.

2 pointsKids, church and work are about the only things that stop me. I’m still pretty young. Sounds like it’s time to start the TRT for a few folks on here. Take your lives back men! You’ve worked a lifetime for these opportunities!

1 pointLet me first introduce myself. My name is Dan and I am a native to arizona. I graduated from Benson in 1999 and the UofA in 2007. My wife and I moved away that same year to Spokane Washington . After 10 years of marriage and no children we decided to adopt through foster care in 2013. We welcomed my disabled son who was 12 mos at the time and my daughter who was two weeks, into our home. The same week we found out we were pregnant with our first biological child. We now have 2 biological children. AJ, my oldest is intellectually disabled and has cerebral palsy. He is now 12 and we put him through Hunter ed this spring with the help of some amazing field day people who helped him. This kid has a lucky horseshoe somewhere and drew a 27 late rifle tag with no points. it took me over 20 years, and 14 points before I drew the same tag last year. I was fortunate enough to shoot a 320 unbroken bull. I know the area a little, and am confident we can get him a bull. My concern is his limited ability to walk long distances. I know I could get him into some spots with his CHAMP permit, but if it dumps snow, it may be very hard for him. We maybe even looking into horses to get to the elk if anyone has access to some. My Dad lives in Show low, and he will be there on the hunt, but just had his shoulder replaced this past June. I am looking for anyone who would like to help should we have difficulty getting him on an elk due to snow, or just pressure, and to possibly help pack. We do have the second rifle tag from December 6th through the 12th. We will be arriving Thanksgiving week to scout and make final preparations.( I currently live in Arkansas.) As a Thankyou, I am willing to share some Idaho elk spots I hunt and maybe even invite someone along when I go there next time. thanks for any help. Dan IMG_3258.dng

1 pointMy cousin has owned this truck since new, 1994. She has garage kept it, and rarely used it. I have wanted it for 25 years. Last time when I asked her about it, she said yes! So, I bought a dog box for the pup, and she brought it down. Doing some work, mainly maintenence but either way I am super pumped to have it. My son will get it when he is 16. Pretty sweet truck, 1994 V6, 5 speed 4x4 toyota with only 123k on it!

1 pointThe buck is now at Wellers. They didn't put a tape on it but said should be 103-108. Sounds good to me because I figured 105.

1 pointThis is me almost exactly. I have threatened to just go camping on a Monday thru Thursday, just to get out of the house. All my friends still work, and have too much stuff going on to go. I have 4 brand new guns that I have not done anything with except to bore sight because every time I talk myself out of going for some stupid little problem or another. I will admit that at 62, I should have kept working at the job I hated, and I left too soon, but can't go back, so now what. I have wanted to volunteer with the Arizona Elk Society a dozen times, but the weekend is the only time I get time with my wife. Maybe we all need to find an easy spot to set up a camp and get our asses around a campfire and worry about the aches and pains of cot, mother earth camping for another day.

1 pointThis is indeed one of the most interesting threads in a long while. We're all fighting the indefensible assault of time but stay in the fight! Now that you're retired, maybe think that your job is to train your body. As you said, you still have "the heart and desire to get out there in the woods and hunt, camp or fish" and now that you have more time maybe think about your job is to "train for the adventure." Movement is medicine. I have a friend who says "Motion is lotion. Rest is rust." He's right. I find it helps to think of the hunt when the inertia tries to drag me down and keep me on the couch. Thanks for a thought provoking post.

1 pointI like the quote,” Dont let the Old Man In” I’m early 60’s but have a POS back and neck due to degenerative disc disease. I like to think I’m 29, but my body reminds me otherwise. I just keep grinding… you rest, you rust!

1 pointYou have to just go, exercise and the outdoors is the fountain of youth. Im sure every time you guys think of all the work of planning and packing and cleaning up after but you actually still go camp or hunt or fish you feel much better after and your glad you went??? I know i feel that way. This year I had an elk tag and spent the entire 14 days or so hunting solo. only took one day off and that was to help another hunter. It was a bummer at times but I wouldnt trade those days for anything. A few tips that may help, organize your gear for less work. I put together a small box trailer with all my gear in it. Bunk bed and camp box. All I need to do is fill the cooler and grab some food and clothes and im on the road. when i get back i just dump the cooler and grab dirty clothes and park the trailer. Its small and cheap but the bed is really nice and man its super convenient. I have a few of those plastic bins from china and all my hunting camp gear and clothes are in them, always ready to go.

1 pointAt 75, I still have the drive and desire to hunt, but none of my friends want to go any more. Add to that the length of time to draw a decent tag, and I rarely get to go any more. I have no desire any more to go on a mediocre hunt that has 6-700 tags and hunters on every ridge. I still enjoy archery javi because I can go alone and pack one out by myself. I guess I’m spoiled by hunting Az since the early 70’s. A lot has changed!
