    Can’t believe it. I drew.

I had the tag in 2017. Shot a average buck. Saw plenty of giants that were off limits.

Exactly. Got drawn for Desert in ought 10 with less points than I have now. You can't draw if you don't try.

Non-res are capped at a MAX of 10% of tags. Meaning that 10% does not necessarily always go to non-res applicants. Not saying you don't have a decent chance, but I wouldn't count your 100% guaranteed chickens until they hatch. Good luck in the draw. December hunts can be great. But can be tough like any other hunts. I had a buddy who drew a Dec tag in the "land of giant Coues bucks" (as he claims) last year. Bad weather knocked him out of 85% of his hunt.

Sorry for the late response. I haven't been as active here lately as I used to. I absolutely think the antler restrictions in NM did work. What I was referring to was the push-back from people who didn't want to be forced into that particular type of management. We are pretty lucky down here in the SW - we can hunt deer every year. Some areas are more challenging, but we're not like most of the country where you either have to own your own big chunk of land or buy into a lease to get to hunt quality deer. We have OTC archery hunts in most units, always some left-over rifle and black-powder hunts in units that produce great bucks if you work hard and get away from the crowds. I'd just like to see what happens in unit 1 & 27 if they are managed more for quality than quantity. Great genetics, great food source, plenty of water. 200+ mule deer don't have to only be a "strip" thing - and they aren't. Many units in AZ have all the things required to produce trophy quality bucks, and many do - despite not being managed as trophy units. If you live in AZ, you can always go hunting - but don't forget our neighbor states - Utah, NM, Nevada, Colorado - if you do your homework, you can meat-hunt every year while building up your chances for a stellar trophy hunt within hours of home.

Sweet pistol. Those Kimbers have a really nice, crisp trigger. Someone is going to get a good gun at a very good price.

Yes the late December hunts are worth it. With the points you have I would keep going for them, draw odds are moving in your favor. They are not a slam dunk that your going to kill a 100in. deer. You got realize there has been 1-4 coues hunts before your hunt depending on the unit. Also hunting pre rut/ rut coues is still tuff, you still have to find them, not as easy as other deer species. The success rates are skewed since some trophy hunt and don’t harvest, some don’t report. I would just look at type of country you want to hunt, deer #s, and units history of quality deer produced, apply, and hope.

looks good! I ordered one and a small bag. I really like that it has buckles, I am always paranoid I will lose my Outdoorsman's pad.

Do you have MAX BP? if not, i wouldn't lose sleep over which one you apply for. Both are good, both have slim to none chances of drawing without max

I went with the 20-70. Here is a picture and video taken from the same spot. I attached my cell phone with a diy phone scope. 20190315_182920-1.mp4

I like the 20-70 zoom personally. If i used it for "glassing" I would probably go for the 20-60WA, but for a quick look to try and decide whether the buck is 95" or 105", it is hard to beat the 70x. also takes great digiscoping photos. I sold my zeiss 15-45x65, which was a great spotter but I much prefer the meopta, although it is pretty big and heavy.

In my eyes, as long as the December hunt is 2+ weeks, and less than ~150 tags, it will always be the prettiest girl at the bar. Tough to take home, but very enjoyable when you do.

It would be hard for me to pass up a 320" bull with a bow in my hands.
  23. 1 point
There are a handful of bulls in that hunt that are legitimately over 320" but not a lot. It is mostly an opportunity hunt. ABSOLUTELY do not pass a 320" bull, especially with not knowing much about the hunt or unit. it is a very crowded hunt but there are a lot of elk. Honestly, i would shoot the first decent 6-point that allowed me to get a shot off. I've been on that hunt a couple times and most of the "mature" bulls are 260-300" 6-points.

I'm not a trophy hunter, so I'll let others speak to the size of bulls. Guessing there will be bulls of almost all sizes running around there though. As for crowds, here's my take: I would expect to see some folks. One of the good things that 6A has going for it though, is the Pine Grove and Rattlesnake quiet areas. Check those out and you might be able to find a little solitude. Good luck to your friend! S.
