My wife and I headed out Thursday after work and got camp set up. When we were getting firewood I noticed a rather large camp a mile away. The camp had several tents and I saw a whole bunch of young kids and adults. Never seen a big camp like that during a javelina hunt. Opening morning, I started glassing at first light for bucks, saw some decent young ones. Folks from the large camp were set up at glassing spots all around us. Each truck had 2-3 kids in it, good to see. About 8:45 I finally caught some pig movement and my wife and I packed up and started to move in. We ran into a grandpa, son and grandson doing the same thing. I asked if they were going on a walk or putting on a stalk. They said they were going to make a stalk on the herd. Since they had a first time hunter, a 10 year old, my wife and I told them to go after them, good luck and said we’ll be watching the stalk from the glassing spot. They invited us to go on the stalk but I wanted it to be a moment among the 3 of them. We went back to the glassing spot and while watching them make a stalk, my wife spotted another herd bout 1000 yards away right above the hunters. It was cool seeing the hunters and slightly above their head in the distance was the second herd. After checking out the landscape and figuring out where the second herd was, we made our move. We came up above the herd and they were just bout ready to head down to bed. Our shots were much longer than usual, a whopping 230 yards. My wife shot first and that muzzle break rattled me a bit and her pig went down. I had to take a few shots to get mine down. When I approached my pig, she was still alive. I used my wife’s pistol to finish it off, At 2 yards I shot and the round was a dud, had no powder (no more speed reloading for me). I saw the bullet fly maybe 100 FPS and bounce off the pig. The pig opened its eyes and charged me a little and took off. I caught up to the pig bout 50 yards down and finished her off. It was a great morning, we ran into the grandpa later on and they were unable to harvest a pig. Wife and I camped another night and on Saturday morning, we saw the same groups of people making a few stalks and heard a gunshot when we were packing up camp, hope that kid got his first big game. First time my wife and I doubled up on anything, the packout wasn’t all that great carrying both pigs.

We drew the early Nov tag in southern AZ and were very fortunate to get perfect weather. Opening morning was supposed to be 25*. We made a plan to hike up and in to an area we have wanted to explore before. Without knowing how ruff this hike would be we finally made it 2 miles into where we wanted to be. We found a few deer but we were still 700+ yards from how high deer were feeding. We decided to make that climb too and get to the elevation we needed. All that work and no shooters. After considering staying put for the evening hunt we finally agreed to back out and not risk a very hard hike out in the dark that night. Turned out to be 5+ miles round trip and a ton of elevation. Sucked. Our legs were cooked for the day so for the evening hunt we decided to “take it easy” and glass closer to the truck. Go figure….That worked. My son found a decent buck at 1200 yards and we made a move to go get a closer look. That hike turned out to be just as nasty as the morning. We got to 525 yards and sat and watched him and decided I would try to take a shot. Getting settled in on the rifle my son said “wait!” There’s a better buck right there too. I located that buck and got another “wait!” Dad there’s a giant right there. I was not able to find that deer and wasted no time turning the rifle over to him. Ranged him at 535, dialed to that, Perfect shot! Unreal. So happy for him. He deserves it. He found that buck and found my buck on Sunday too. Mine went 91” and is my best buck, 715 yards. Super fun hunt. We ended up hiking 10 miles opening day. So worth it. We’ve never had an opportunity on a buck like his before. Any score guesses?

I didn't read freds comment as wanting proof, just wanting to see one fwiw. I've seen a lot of guys crap on boarmans posts never really understood why, except maybe trying to offer help or opinion on something he didn't necessarily have the experience to help on. Other then that seemed like he was only trying to be helpful though..

Grew up in the valley but am in construction and have been hunting all over the state for the last 10 years. East of Prescott/Mayer area sounds the most like what you are describing and I know some people that have done that exact thing, buy an acre outside of Prescott to homeschool the kids and the dad drives an hour into the valley once every couple weeks. Even if it’s as much as twice a week, Mayer is less than an hour from north phoenix so I have considered that before. Only problem is I think those areas are pretty expensive especially as you get closer to Prescott/higher elevation. wickenburg and buckeye kinda fit your description but they are crazy expensive and will only get more crowded as development moves out that way. Also just hot dry desert. Payson is awesome and truly the gateway to the best fishing and hunting in the state of AZ, also while only 45 minutes from fountain hills/the valley. And will probably never get crowded/overdeveloped cause it basically sits on a rock pile that’s impossible to build on. If you can afford it that’s where I would go. Oracle is a small town north of Tuscon that could work if you are mostly between Tuscon and the valley, and sits at 4500’ so cooler than both, and has amazing Coues hunting in every direction. But I don’t know anything about schools/reputation/cost of living. Let us know where you land and God Bless.

It’s my annual contribution to GFs budget. We always put in, go out ,fart around, grill some brats and drink a couple beers, and call it good! Almost screwed up and killed one a couple years ago, that would have ruined the day, lol.

You can shoot 2 each year, so long as different hunt #'s.. likely a leftover tag.
