Tomorrow we ride . . . I won't be posting any field updates on this one. I want to leave the phone put away and soak up the time with my dad and two boys. We have the whole hunt available. Hopefully when we get back we have plenty to share. I am a giddy like a kid at Christmas right now.

I'm not sure there's ever a time in AZ when you might not see a rattlesnake unless there's a foot of snow on the ground and it's 0 degs. One year way back I was hunting javelina just west of SR77 & the San Carlos res. It was either late Feb. or early March. So one morning after a rather cold night, I was working my way thru the bottom of a canyon and came to an area that had lots of tall, thick brush and large rocks that I had to meander thru. I was pushing my way thru sort of sideways, using my shoulder to deflect the branches and happened to look down. There, spread lenghtwise sunning itself on a big flat rock, was a 3' rattler, and as I put my right foot down about 10-15 inches away, it lashed out. I was fortunate it wasn't coiled because the strike came up a bit short. But, as I jumped back, I screamed like a little girl, just thinking I had been nailed. A few seconds later, a guy yelled, "Are you Ok?" He was on the canyon rim above me and heard my little scream. Before I could shoot the snake, it disappeared into a crevice between the rocks, which was likely its winter den.

Here is the rest of the story yesterday Lance Jim and myself worked our way into an area that we can glass. Lance glasses 2 bulls early in the morning at a mile away we looked around the other area and could not find any other bulls that were worth pursuing. Lance made the call that we were going to make our move to a bench that we thought if we could get to we can make a shot. As we are approaching the area we got to about 1500 yards and started the glass and I was able to pick up one of the two bulls that we spotted earlier this morning he was a nice main framed 6 x 6 but had been broken off between his fifth and six point a definite shooter for this time of year just about at that time we starting to see more elk come into the same canyon where we recently saw the two bulls. At this point Lance said it’s time to make out move and get to that next bench we proceeded to get into position on the next bench when Jim my guide spotted a huge bull coming over the ridge. He radioed into us “guys I just spotted a monster bull coming over the top of the ridge bigger than anything we’ve seen” at that point we worked in to the ridge. Suddenly we heard a huge bugle shortly there after Lance picked up cows moving through the timber. After then hunt Lance mentioned after the bugle he knew we were in the middle of the elk because we had a bugle the right and cows to our left. At that point Lance got me into position on the shooting sticks and we watched cows pass through shortly there after Lance says there’s a bull get ready. I’m in my shooting lane, my crosshairs on the bull and Lance says don’t you shoot. I was thinking in the back of my mind that was a good 5 x 5 that we just let walk away. Lance said to me “Tim there’s bigger bulls in here “, at that point we move down the ridge and Lance to stops and says “there’s of shooter bull right there behind a pine tree “. He was in the thick pine looking at us. At that point I turned the scope up to 15 power and started looking for holes in the trees. I was able to find one lane on the bull he stepped out in a small hole. I had a shot Lance stopped the bull and BOOM! I made the shot. I want to thank Lance, Jim, Weston and all of the Timberland Outfitters crew for an amazing hunt and a bull of a lifetime

Well after my good dog passed a few months ago I came out here and hunted without a dog and used my cousins dogs. That took a couple days and decided need another. Heading to eastern Kansas tomorrow to try a couple out and possibly bring home. Once you have good pointers you can’t be without one. Here’s a bad ace female they have for me to try out.

Went out today with the cousins and had a good day shooting pheasant. Wind was howling again but made it work.

Daughter got a double, love that. We ran into 3 different covey's of 30+ birds that weren't spooked. Looks like a very good year for gambles.

I tracked a couple bulls in the snow a couple of weeks ago, they covered two miles like it was a walk in the park. That being said the bull I missed was bedded within 200 yards of water.

Thanks man. We crept into an area this morning at dark and about 45 minutes past sun up some awesome cat came motoring in on a wheeler up to a water hole down from us, hung by the hole and spun out of there... not sure of his point. We left after he shook up the whole area. We spent the rest of the morning glassing and the kid was looking kind of flush so we just called it. We may try to drive back down later in the week if life allows. Good luck to your young ones too.

The herds I chase in September move 2-3 miles from where they water to where they bed.

On reflection, Smith & Peterson did their thing in some form of the Mesa (East Valley) Tribune newspaper. Not sure if it's even still around. The TV show was AZ Outdoors. In their actual working lives, Smith was an Allstate insurance salesman and Peterson was a teacher/football coach at Mesa HS. A tribute to Ned for his 80th BD this past April.

My confusion (and lots of people's I have now found out) on the thread stems from the level of ego to even start the thread which based on other threads I've been reminded of that you have participated in on this forum, I should visit the site more often and I would know how you conduct your business. Your mentor must be proud. Actions conducted with grace and selflessness without the overwhelming ego and narcissism, which is how you are coming across, is much more effective long term if you want folks to talk about you. Obviously YMMV. Pardon my intrusion on your thread. I'm done.

I did use one of those 3K rifles ( Mark V 300 weatherby mag ) but got the gun given to me for FREE.... made the 512 yard shot a drop in the bucket... my middle son filled his tag the next day. And my youngest daughter filled her jr deer tag 30 minutes into the hunt...and I took a buddy out on the mule deer hunt who also tagged out the first hour of the hunt. 4 tags 4 deer good times!

Congratulations drawing such a coveted tag. By far, this is my favorite place to hunt mule deer. If there is still available water up high and it is not frozen a lot of the deer will still be up high. Once the water sources freeze where they can't break the ice, all the deer drop down to lower elevations. Sowats is a popular place for deer and deer hunters. If you hunt down low you will see fewer hunters a few miles north and north west of Sowats. As so many have already said, glassing is the key and being at right place at right time. When I retire I plan on spending time up there every fall during hunting seasons whether I have a tag or not.
