Wife and I had a few fun days in the heat filling some deer tags to start the season off. Wife killed her buck at 469 yards one shot and dropped him in his tracks. Shot my buck at 250 yards. Nice to have some coues meat in the freezer. We have our 10 year old daughter’s first deer tag to look forward to in 3 weeks which is the one we are truly excited about to get her her first buck

It was a hot one this year! At one time our trucks recorded 98 degrees on Saturday. We only glassed up 24 bucks this season, way less than our usual 50 bucks. After the first 4 days of struggling and passing up bucks, my wife decided to turn her hunt into a meat hunt. At first light she saw this buck 1300 yards away and we watched him while waiting for the heat to kick in. Once it got warm enough, he bedded and we were off. We snuck in to 309 yards and had to wait a couple of hours for him to stand up. As soon as the buck got up, she was all ready and dropped him. I got a feeling this next Nov hunt is gonna be a real good one with the cooler temperatures and a lot more bucks in the field.

Seems like this site is more Craigslist than Coues hunting, so here is a coues deer. Glassed up a bigger buck on the next to last day. Made a move and glassed him as soon as he stepped in to the thick stuff and the wait was on. An hour and fifteen minutes later this guy stepped out, 435 yards. Slight adjustment to the turret, one shot and he was down. Shot the buck at 930, got back to the side by side at 315. Craig's Custom Rifles 28 Nosler, 180 Berger Hybrid, shot from the seated position with the Harris bipod.

I shot a great buck opening morning! Not quite as big as the one above but still a really great Deer.

Wasn’t my best day of shooting, shot 11 but was able to bag 8 and lost 3 in the tall grass. The birds were talkative till about 10:30 and the coveys were good sized. Then while driving down a wash I noticed a nope rope, needless to say he met his maker. Don’t need him in any of the bushes I’m looking for downed birds in.

Welp, I let the old man in this past week. After 2 days, my brother bailed on me so I was hunting solo which I have done plenty in the past. Friday thru Monday were hot with very little deer movement. The wind and a bit of rain came in on Monday evening and Tuesday morn I climbed to a knoll and saw deer across the canyon playing tag or something. After I settled in, I glassed up 3X3 and a spike feeding not far from the playing deer. Ranged the 3X3 at 225 yds... And my right knee said nope. Crossing that canyon alone with a deer, rifle and pack was something I was not willing to do, so I watched them for an hour until they went over the saddle. For the rest of the hunt I ignored the knoll and tried to find something closer to camp.

14x16 Davis brand wall tent with stove. Canvas is getting a little tired and dirty (A few pin holes above the stove and stove jack flap is ripped off). Includes full internal frame, stakes, ropes, camp chef stove with water tank. Will be a great, cheap, and warm base camp for the late elk season. $400 without stove, $600 with stove

He's awesome and I can't wait to get him back from @BIGBROWNS when he's done with him. It was fun meeting so many people excited about my deer and happy for me.

Took a few years to figure out this unit. Not a good unit. Scouted a big buck this summer. Saw him 2 days before season but not again for 3 days during season. Crafty old sucker. Bears like flies. Not for the faint of heart unit. It sucks. Big buck scouted. Caught this buck stretching at 130 PM, 20 minutes after my nap, Day 2 of 5 of hunt but day 5 for me as NM has 5 day seasons and I got there early. Thought he was my big guy and he was in a good spot for an open sighted muzzleloader with very few deer in this unit. Gotta go get there in case I said. Got setup at 75 yards after a sporty stalk. Great setup with some rocks in front, perfect. I still couldn't tell exactly what he was as he was tight in the trees with 83 degree highs. But I was hoping he was my guy as this area was smack in the middle of the big guys home range. Opportunities are not many in NM for sure.... Sat on him for 4 hours at 75 yards and still couldn't ID what exactly he was other than a good buck. Finally, he got up to feed a bit and I realized he wasn't the big guy but dang with a big wind storm coming in and at 75 yards I assessed him fast and said he's pretty good. He wouldnt turn so I shot him hard, hard quarter to. Shot him at 75 with a 275 grain Barnes. Heart shot him but I didn't know with the BH 209 smoke . He went a full 100 yards and it was a bloodbath. No idea how he went that far. He's got ear and brisket wrinkles and his teeth match that. He's at least 6 I think if not older. Maybe older. He's likely as good as he's gonna get, likely. I'm happy with him even though the big boy is a class above. Inspired by Kev...

Being the gunner on a pronghorn hunt is way, way different than being the spotter. Especially after you've waited half your life to pull the tag. Here's a quick recap of my 2024 pronghorn hunt Scouted all summer looking for something to really focus my efforts on. Although we did find a few decent bucks, it took until the beginning of August to find the one that really got my heart rate up. We first spotted him a little over a mile away with heatwaves making it tough to really know what he was. The next morning we walked in before sunup in hopes of at least being close enough to get better pics to review. Found him that morning at about 700yds. Something piqued his curiosity and he made our morning way easier: IMG_5745_2.mov He was probably prettiest speed goat I had ever seen, plus he seemed to like me back, so my mind was made up. We named him Heart for obvious reasons. We continued to scout other areas but always made one more pass through to 1) see if we could relocate him 2) see if there were any archery hunters on him and 3) see how many rifle hunters were scouting in that area. As it turns out, we never saw a single vehicle until day two of the hunt. way less stressful that way. As hot as it is, big props to the archery guys... trying to close to bow range with buzz worms crawling around is a ballsy proposition IMG_5433.MOV Sadly, this one died of lead poisoning not long after this video was taken... Fast forward to the day before the opener: I am fortunate that my brother Curt has the ability to work remote thanks to Elon Musk and Star Link so he was in camp early. I wasn't able to get out of work until about noon. Just as I was pointing the Bronco north I get a message from him. He hasn't moved a half mile from the weekend prior. IMG_5982.mov Opening morning: Here we go!!! I had a lot of help from friends and family on this one. had two sets of spotters with Curt and I on the ground the area we had last seen him. As the sun rises we get a call that the buck is in a pasture. We make the half mile walk to get into shooting position only we missed our mark and the buck spotted us before we spotted him. things got real frantic, real fast and I ended up sending a shot across his bow. I lost a little piece of my soul when he kicked that extra gear and was leaving a dust wake across the prairie. We played hide and seek with him for a little under 5 miles. He finally bed and we were able to get to 450yds before we ran out of cover. Its way easier when they don't know you're there- was able to get a comfortable rest, in the shade, and waited for him get up to stretch. Results below: Helluva thing these pronghorn... Hope everyone gets to experience it at least once. Thanks for looking Dave

Had a great hunt this past week. Was able to be joined by my oldest son and we were guided by Dillon the owner at Chasin the King outfitters. I’ve hunted with Dillion before and I can’t say enough about Dillion and his crew. Not only is he an expert at his craft but he’s one on the most knowledgeable guys I’ve met on the plant life, and the history of the area you’re hunting. If you want to know the name and details of each shrub or tree he’ll bend your ear. If you’re fortunate enough to work with Dillion be ready to work. He’ll push you to the limit but keep you laughing as you climb up and down each canyon.

God continues to bless me, and today was no different! Unit 34a was scheduled to close today at sundown, so I headed down for the final day in hopes of killing a big ole bruin, but just happy to be outdoors! I had never killed a bear with a rifle (3 with bow and one with handgun) so I decided to take the old 30/30 lever action out for a try. This big ole bruin walked out right before sunset and presented himself at 42 yds. 1 shot from the old lever action and he tumbled into the gulch below, but he wasn't done as he reared up and began to come straight for my tree stand! 2 quick shots put a end to that and then the work begun! this bear stood nearly 4ft high as he walked in, a monster of a bear ( maybe some Mexican Griz DNA in him). I was a little nervous as I walked up to him, because he was so big! The pack out sucked! I hurt everywhere now! We green scored the skull at 20.5" tonight! Amazing day for a last day of the hunt! I think I'm done bear hunting! Too old for this stuff! lol. Truly Blessed!

You have to just go, exercise and the outdoors is the fountain of youth. Im sure every time you guys think of all the work of planning and packing and cleaning up after but you actually still go camp or hunt or fish you feel much better after and your glad you went??? I know i feel that way. This year I had an elk tag and spent the entire 14 days or so hunting solo. only took one day off and that was to help another hunter. It was a bummer at times but I wouldnt trade those days for anything. A few tips that may help, organize your gear for less work. I put together a small box trailer with all my gear in it. Bunk bed and camp box. All I need to do is fill the cooler and grab some food and clothes and im on the road. when i get back i just dump the cooler and grab dirty clothes and park the trailer. Its small and cheap but the bed is really nice and man its super convenient. I have a few of those plastic bins from china and all my hunting camp gear and clothes are in them, always ready to go.

At 75, I still have the drive and desire to hunt, but none of my friends want to go any more. Add to that the length of time to draw a decent tag, and I rarely get to go any more. I have no desire any more to go on a mediocre hunt that has 6-700 tags and hunters on every ridge. I still enjoy archery javi because I can go alone and pack one out by myself. I guess I’m spoiled by hunting Az since the early 70’s. A lot has changed!

The big drawback for me is finding someone to go with. Friends are either too busy or don't want to get up early. If I could retire, and probably could. I enjoy working and at 72 have a lot of energy.
