9 pointsHad a great hunt this year. On the drive down Thursday I was telling the wife how much I really wanted to kill a buck. The last several years I have been helping more than hunting. When I glassed up this buck she refused to shoot first. One shot and he was down. A few minutes later I got on the 15s to make sure he was still down and a bigger buck was standing 10ft away. She missed but it was still a great time with family and friends.

6 pointsThat's about as random of a subject as I could make it, but here is the background. We have a group of 5 dads (myself included) that are doing monthly meetings on "man training" with our 5 sons, whereby we teach them some practical skill (electrical wiring, car maintenance, how to field dress an elk, overnight forest survival, etc). We also have a spiritual element to it, where we work on something like patience, kindness, self control, etc. All of the boys are high school sophomores and cityslickers. We'd love to find an opportunity to come out to a ranch and learn how to rope a calf, because that would be completely new and out of their element...which is the point. As men, we are routinely thrown into situations that are new and we need to find a way out. Its a great confidence builder! If there is anyone that has a ranch, we'd love to come out for a little demonstration and some practical work. Heck, if you have some chores around the ranch for the boys to do, even better! Feel free to DM me with any ideas. Thanks for reading!

5 pointsI didn’t get a tag and neither did my brother so we turned our attention to two of my nephews. I wasn’t able to be out opening day but my brother and his step son got to 150 yards of a heavier antlered 4x4 and he took one shot and dropped him. This was his step son’s first buck. On Sunday, we watched another 4x4 bed down and walked my brother in law and nephew into his bed and my nephew was able to make a great shot and filled his tag. Now, we have 5 adults with tags left to fill. 3 of them are able to hunt the whole time so hopefully they are successful this week. I can’t wait to get back out Friday afternoon and help out. I absolutely love the desert.

1 pointSo this hunt honestly was hard. On scouting we climbed a big hill on a windy evening and didn't see anything, but my Spidey sense told me it was a good spot. Well, don't always trust your Spidey sense I guess. Day one we climb the hill that looked ever so promising and not a single deer to be glassed up under good conditions. So for the afternoon we go to another area to sit water. Bumped a bunch of deer in a nice shady area. No chance the rest of the day. Day 2 we head further in and bump deer again at the same spot. I made pins of all the water sources. Day 2 we head further in bit again bump a doe and fawn at the same spot. But head further to where I had a good feeling. I knew we had a good plan. I leave Kiki with the rifle and decide to go out the bottom and see if I can glass something. I hear a shot and me and Bucky rush back. He took a shot I would have told him not too but glad he missed. I hop out and decide to try a one man deer drive. Nada, We decided to move back to the deer bumping spot. I have him head before me with another deer drive idea. I'm in place and sure enough he bumps deer at the spot. I come in on my drive and nada. All deer already left town. Now me and Bucky put in 9 miles that day and by the time we were sitting again my jeans have tears on both knees. It's hot and we decide let's pull out. So I decided to go full village people mode and turn my jeans into boy shorts. Cuz when you are hunting wearing short jean shorts is how you attract studs. We head out and Bucky ain't doing well on the hike back. He won't leave my side when hunting so he went with on the deer drives, that little guy did 9 human miles and he was overheating on the way to the truck. Kiki says "Dad, if you carry the rifle I'll carry Bucky the rest of the way." Seemed fair. Kiki took that night off and I took Enoch out for the evening , nada. Third morning, I decided to sleep in and needed a rest day. Day 4 we decide to hunt the deer bumping spot. And of course we bump a doe an fawn as we get there. Leaves are thick and impossible to navigate quiet but we decide this is the spot. I'm running out of time and this was my last morning so anything with horns is on the menu. I decide to glass a nice area while I leave kiki with the rifle set up on deer bedding central. I'm glassing a promising spot when I hear a shot. I haul butt and round up gear. I find Kiki checking out his second buck. Good times. I'm relieved because I couldn't do any more mornings. He was relieved because he's been putting in miles and as it turned out for a spike! But that's life and that's hunting! Bucky got his fill of fresh meat and we hiked back to the truck packs full and heavy. What a great experience. And we also got a nice shed too

1 pointYes, having a garage/truck full of tools makes a big difference. I've pretty much always done my own mechanic work and I've even had to "make" a tool in order to be able to get something fixed. I know Wildwood and trust him and know I could trust his son. Great, solid people with really amazing work ethics. I'm even thinking about asking his son to take care of a few things on vehicles for me, and I've seldom trusted others to work on my vehicles. But I'm getting too old to efficiently work on my vehicle and equipment. Best wishes.

1 pointSeems like this site is more Craigslist than Coues hunting, so here is a coues deer. Glassed up a bigger buck on the next to last day. Made a move and glassed him as soon as he stepped in to the thick stuff and the wait was on. An hour and fifteen minutes later this guy stepped out, 435 yards. Slight adjustment to the turret, one shot and he was down. Shot the buck at 930, got back to the side by side at 315. Craig's Custom Rifles 28 Nosler, 180 Berger Hybrid, shot from the seated position with the Harris bipod.
