I don't want my daughter to waste the one point she had to get a rifle tag, so my goal is to look at every antelope in the unit and pattern the one that fits the best. I know peak growing season is the next couple of months, but can remember if its mass or length that grows the most. Does anyone know?

Walapai Johnny was like a grandpa to me. One of my heroes. I grew up around him, learned how to roll smokes and drink Lord Calvert whiskey straight from the jug from that old man. When I was in middle school my class was assigned to do a report on somebody they admired. While most people chose to report about celebrities and athletes, I interviewed Walapai and did my report on him. Man the stories he could tell. When I turned in my assignment, the teacher told me the assignment was supposed to be about a real person and that she was going to make me re do the paper. When I told Walapai about this he drove his 1959 Ford cattle truck from Fredonia, Arizona to Cedar City, Utah and came to my class, told the teacher he heard that she didn't think he was real and proceeded to enchant the entire class with his stories. Needless to say I got an A after that. This was a couple of years before he died, I was probably 14 and he was in his 80s. He was the last of the true cowboys, or as he referred to himself, " the last of the blue-eyed Indians." Walapai died in 1996 from an infection in his leg which the docs told him that he could live for a few more years if he would let them amputate his leg. He told them "I came into this world a whole man, I'm goin out the same." Rest in peace Cowboy, you made me who I am today.

Big congrats on your tag! The sheep gods have definitely shined down on our house. I drew a tag 2 years ago and my wife drew this year. She has 41W as well. -Tracy

Trying to beat the possible storm coming but the weather is so nice and cool compared to the past month! Fajitas with Brazilian steak house seasoning and the “cook it your self” raw tortillas.

Not sure what version it is but last I heard the SBR and the suppressor acts were still in play. Also heard the suppressor may just be removing the tax. the big problem now in some states is they are already adding bans on assault weapons. White House needs to hammer any states budget free hand out money if they enact these type of laws.

BTW, it is important to make sure there nothing behind the target for about 5 miles. Target shooting in the desert is difficult for the same reason. And don't shoot anything close to you, within a couple of hundred yards, that a round can be reflected back from. One YouTube video showed a guying catching a ricochet with his ear protection. He must of had Angels watching over him that day!!!! Ammo is available for about $3.00 to $3.75 a rnd. I remember when it was less than $2.50. The youth ( and adults) enjoyed the big bang and the distance the round would produce! The M82A1 absorbs some of the recoil so it was similar to a 12 gauge to them. Just a longer "push". I don't know what the recoil is like for this posted rifle. Too bad it's for a lefty or I might would be finding out.

My wife and I headed out Thursday after work and got camp set up. When we were getting firewood I noticed a rather large camp a mile away. The camp had several tents and I saw a whole bunch of young kids and adults. Never seen a big camp like that during a javelina hunt. Opening morning, I started glassing at first light for bucks, saw some decent young ones. Folks from the large camp were set up at glassing spots all around us. Each truck had 2-3 kids in it, good to see. About 8:45 I finally caught some pig movement and my wife and I packed up and started to move in. We ran into a grandpa, son and grandson doing the same thing. I asked if they were going on a walk or putting on a stalk. They said they were going to make a stalk on the herd. Since they had a first time hunter, a 10 year old, my wife and I told them to go after them, good luck and said we’ll be watching the stalk from the glassing spot. They invited us to go on the stalk but I wanted it to be a moment among the 3 of them. We went back to the glassing spot and while watching them make a stalk, my wife spotted another herd bout 1000 yards away right above the hunters. It was cool seeing the hunters and slightly above their head in the distance was the second herd. After checking out the landscape and figuring out where the second herd was, we made our move. We came up above the herd and they were just bout ready to head down to bed. Our shots were much longer than usual, a whopping 230 yards. My wife shot first and that muzzle break rattled me a bit and her pig went down. I had to take a few shots to get mine down. When I approached my pig, she was still alive. I used my wife’s pistol to finish it off, At 2 yards I shot and the round was a dud, had no powder (no more speed reloading for me). I saw the bullet fly maybe 100 FPS and bounce off the pig. The pig opened its eyes and charged me a little and took off. I caught up to the pig bout 50 yards down and finished her off. It was a great morning, we ran into the grandpa later on and they were unable to harvest a pig. Wife and I camped another night and on Saturday morning, we saw the same groups of people making a few stalks and heard a gunshot when we were packing up camp, hope that kid got his first big game. First time my wife and I doubled up on anything, the packout wasn’t all that great carrying both pigs.
