3 pointsWhy are you asking? It’s not free, he wants to trade, that means you would have to give something to get something.

2 pointsHonest question here. I'm a biologist by training, not deer, but don't know the answers to the below other than my 60+ days in the field in the fall. The last 10 years there have been at least 4 to 5 very bad droughts years and in my opinion from what I've seen in the field, for both deer and elk, the secondary rut, say October for elk and late Jan to mid Feb for deer, sometimes has been just as active or even more avtice as what I will call the primary rut. What happens if now having tons of late calves and fawns which there are, are now mature and not coming into estrus until the "second" cycle which is normal for when they were born. At what point does the "rut" shift a month later and that is the new "norm" based on environmental conditions? Or do they late calves and fawns naturally want to cycle when they are mature at the "primary" rut time due to length of day? There has been significant rut behavior differences in the past 10 years IMHO... Sorry for typos. Typing from phone on top of a mountain.

1 pointGot to share youth deer camp with some good friends, with three youth tags in camp. My son had killed a spike last year and was looking for forked or bigger this year. One of the hunters was looking for his first deer and was first up to bat. Opening morning a buddy located a couple small bucks, including a shooter 2x2 with a small forky. They bedded them, and we watched them a few hours, waiting for them to get up and offer a shot. They finally did, and a first deer was harvested! The forky stuck around and even though he was bigger then a spike, my son decided he was too young and let him walk. Day two, another buddy showed us a new area. We worked a ridgeline glassing fingers on the ridges to the east and west. After a mile or so and the 3rd glassing spot, this guy was spotting working up a draw and feeding. We knew he was a shooter in an instant. He wasn’t in a hurry, but sure wasn’t gonna bed for us. He was moving towards a small saddle. He was at 650 yards, and we could maybe shave 200 yards getting to the next ridge but wouldn’t be able to get there before he was over the ridge and gone. It was a now or never type of thing, and the deer was broadside, slightly quartering to. I trust the gun and dope, and my son can shoot. We made sure he had a solid rest, dialed for distance and had him hold for a slight breeze. Kid was cool as a cucumber. At the sound of the shot, the deer hunched and I knew we had a hit, but he ran over the saddle so we couldn’t confirm. It was a long 30 minutes to hike down the one ridge and up the other but we found him about 20 yards from where he was the shot, piled against a tree just over the crest. Entrance was middle on onside shoulder, exit just behind off shoulder. His smile says it all and I couldn’t be prouder! The third hunter is still looking for something special, so send some big buck vibes his way this week!

1 pointMy son drew his 2nd choice 12aw antlerless for his first deer hunt. Due to the weather we got a room in Kanab for the weekend. We had just enough time to drive through the unit Thursday before dark but didn't see any deer. We were joined by his cousin and my brother in law. Friday morning had mom spotting bucks all over the place up high. Between glassing and driving we saw 17 bucks and no does by lunch time. After lunch and some exploring we changed elevation and started seeing some does. We got busted on our first stalk but right before dark we spotted this doe moving through some oaks. Jase and I made a quick stalk and I stopped her with a bleat in a small opening. He made the most of it and shot her at 150yds off my tripod with his 300wsm. She jumped at the shot and ran out of sight. Everyone came down to help us track. Before we even found blood i glassed down the hill and saw an ear in the grass. I handed Jase the binos and told him to look where he last saw her. It took him a min but when he saw her he got the biggest smile I have ever seen. After pics we navigated the new etag app and got her gutted. While we were skinning her G&f stopped by and said he would tell the check station to wait for us. We got her checked in 15min late. It was nice of them to wait for us. Back home Saturday we got her cut up and Jase cooked us steaks for dinner. Great memories were made!

1 pointHi, I have an HK model 630 (.223) semi auto that jammed with a live round that I cannot unjam. Long shot but hoping to find someone preferably East valley that might be proficient with this not so common rifle. Thanks!

1 pointFirst, he's not being played. Second, I've sent him my number to communicate. Third. My questions are valid since I need a better idea of what caliber and manufacturer he is looking for. A 22-250 is much better for Coues and a 30-06 is much better for Mule. Also, everybody's opinion of what constitutes expensive ammo varies although some ammo is very obviously expensive. Fourth, whether discussing on the forum in public or privately by text, the process is still the same. But, yes, if we talk by voice we should be able to communicate faster. Finally, as PRDATER is famous for asking, his location would be a help as logistics may be an issue. I don't have an absolute need to own his pistol, but I do have extra rifles that I could possibly help me out with. In fact, there is nothing in these Classifieds that I absolutely "need". But there are things that I like and I also try to help others to a degree. In this case, I'm trying to see if I can help him and it works well enough for me. But I need to know more specifically what he wants. This is becoming more of a hassel and problem than I had expected. PRDATER's suggestion works for me, even if I don't see much difference unless we talk by voice instead of text, and evidently some on this forum are too immature to understand the need for the questions asking clarity and what a cheap violin is ( a "cheap orchestra violin 🎻, aka fiddle, with bow is now about $3,500 unless you care nothing at all about sound.even the cheapest violins with a necessary bow, will run a few hundred dollars) again, the perspective of one's definition of "cheap". If 25-06 can explain the real usefulness of his "cheap" shot other than demonstrating his own venting of limited understanding and evident ignorance, or his venting if his own frustration over his own personal situation, then by all means give it a shot and we'll see how many ways we can interpret it. So many keyboard giants. If they had real wisdom their personal lives would reflect it in their personal and financial success achieved honestly. Those who really know me are free to judge if they wish to. Those who don't judge in ignorance and are just fools.

1 pointWhen i used to get late season archery tags. A friend called in more than a few bulls for me in November. I think there are two reasons for the later and later rut. 1st is all the females are not bred in September making them go into a second estrus cycle. 2nd and I see this with deer as well, the amount of human interaction with elk during September is extreme and forces them back a month to the less interrupted of October. Back in the 90s when archery and calling was still fringe. I would watch full rutting on September 1st.

1 pointCall Dean at Lippert Doyle taxidermy , Charlie is his relative. He will have his number
-
1 pointYes. Regardless of when they were conceived/born...they will follow the natural primary rut cycle once they are mature breeding age. I have noticed that if feed isn't good due to dry conditions, they won't come into estrus. If we see late rain activity, like we did this year, this will kick them into second estrus. They will also kick into second estrus if they didn't get bred during the primary cycle. (if conditions are good) This has been my experience closely paying attention all these years. I too have witnessed where the second rut is unbelievable. Unfortunately, this happens on years we don't put in for tags due to bad antler growth.
-
1 pointYes, the rut ran late in 23 this year. The big boys didn’t show up until right before the youth hunt. I felt sorry for those who had early tags this year.

1 pointMy 14-year-old son, Ryder, got it done on Sunday morning during his youth antlerless elk hunt. He and I stalked and bumped the herd of 20 or so that she was in for nearly 2 hours and 1.5 miles through the forest before he dropped to a prone position and shot through a thicket while they were trying to get away again and hit this girl in both lungs with his .308 Weatherby using a 165 grain Nosler Accubond, in what was likely his last chance at them that morning. I couldn't be more proud of him if I tried! Now we'll let the meat age for a few weeks, then butcher it up and head on out to our father-and-son deer hunt on the 24th. I can hardly wait! Special thanks to my 8-year-old son, Gatlin, for tagging along!
