My best friend came out to Arizona for his first ever coues hunt this last January. We had a great time and were able to get both our harvests on film. We're amateurs when it comes to running a camera, but we learned a lot for the next time we have tags to fill. His wife put together this short video and with the August archery season around the corner, I thought y'all might like to see it.

$15k for 500"+ bull. I promise you, the Governor's Tag holders pay WAY more than this. I imagine some of those tag holders have as easy of a time as these hunts. I have heard stories from some guides. Fly the guy in, drive him to the shooting position, he takes the shot, they drive him back to the airport, and he gets his deer delivered to him. Not all of them! Probably not even many of them. But it does happen. And having 15-20 guys watching an animal 24/7 for weeks prior, might as well be a high fence hunt. I wish I could afford to do it though.

City is for convenience. Lived in the Valley since 1962, with a brief 3-year exodus in the 1970's to the Colorado high country (Vallecito Lake at 8300' outside of Durango) where we owned a resort. Guided fishermen in the summer, hunters in the fall and hit nails in the winter & spring. But...I've always been the "Have gun/rod, will travel" type. As such, I've been fortunate to hunt or fish in 39 states and 10 Canadian provinces. So it's been a good & full life for this outdoorsman. 😎

This V6 powered chick magnet is rated at 19 in the city, 25 on the highway for an EPA estimated 21 combined. Loaded down with hunting gear, I suspect it will be towards the lower number!

Several years ago trolling for sailfish in the Sea of Cortez we kept getting our ballyhoo baits nabbed and lines cut by something...we threw out a Maruader with wire leader...then someone got up in the crow’s nest and confirmed it was sharks not Wahoo molesting the troll:)

If you are chucking jigs 80# spectra with 50# mono top shot should work...maybe go bigger at Guadalupe or Alijos...if you have a week to fish;) It’s tough for flyline baits to tow heavy mono tho, I would go with 50# braid and 30# test with a rod that can lift and load at 8-10# of drag and a two speed to winch any fiesty YT that try to go deep and break you off on the rocky bottom. I run PowerPro braid with no complaints but I am far from a pro, lucky to fish 7-10 days a year. I like to run braid to mono for stretch to flouro. Avoid the green braid if you can, It is very difficult to see at dawn and late in the day.

For flylining a lighter set up I would recommend white or another bright color that will help you see your line. My 25/30# rig has 40# White Power Pro and I switch a short leader depending on the bite. For a heavier rig for deep dropping with a jig or sinker rig, I would maybe look into that line counter stuff. Most of the time I had very little idea how deep I was other than looking at the rings on the inside of the spool as a general reference. The bigger fish I got last time was on 80# White Power Pro with Blue Seaguar 60# fluoro for leader. I used a pretty short topshot on that one. Maybe only a few feet of fluoro, like 3 or 4' max. I would recommend a good bit longer. Maybe 25 yards or so. Especially if you are not casting that rig much. If you use some mono as a topshot in between, fluoro can be much shorter. More than one way to skin that cat, for sure.

With early archery around the corner... figured I'd share the buck I had last year at 12 yards. He still bested me. It was only my 2nd sit ever with a bow - mistakes were made. Awesome encounter though!
