Arrived Tuesday , got set up , and then the rains came. Quite the downpour , some moisture inside as well. Wednesday morning sunshine . Coyotes were heard frequently and on a morning sit, 5 went by me about 20 ft away. The last one stopped to look at me. Sorry I didn’t get a pic. Ran into a herd (?) of coatimundi, 20 plus. Was surprised that the east side of 4186 burnt again. Had not known of a wild fire there this summer. F 35 flying , A10’s and border patrol helicopters. Spectacular moon rise and sun sets. Always a treat and pleasure to watch . Does were everywhere. Did not see a Buck until day 5 of my 6 days to hunt. 8:45 , he is walking down a draw and put him down at 174yds. As I watch him drop, I see a much larger /wider Buck go back up the mountain. Lesson learned, maybe glass behind the 1st Buck you see. My Buck was a 3 pt with a kicker on the right side on front side of brow tine. Drug him down the wash , about 3 hours back to camp and butcher up. I love this unit with or without a harvest. BTW, that is my happy , excited look.

Don't use Dawn. Just use water I keep a paint scraper in the drawer. I scrape it clean and the use oil to finish scrubbing. If you use Dawn it will draw the oil out of the pores and ruin your seasoning. Use mineral oil for storage. Vegetable oil will go rancid

Just finished cleaning my dad’s cast iron. He passed away a few months ago and loved cooking on trips, sometimes more than actually hunting. All USA pieces by Wagner, Chicago Hardware Foundry and Lodge. I already have an equal amount or more in my garage. Can a guy have too much cast iron? The wife thinks I need to sell some off.

CatfishKev - Agreed. My son is almost ten with a 14 yr old's composure. He wants to learn and I know i can keep him quiet. I reside in Yuma. From what i gather, Cibola lake north of Martinez lake might be fruitful. Or east of the small town of Cibola, I know there is game in there. Ive seen huge Big horned sheep and donkeys, Its thick brush but also a good watering hole. Edge- Yessir, I look at it every day. PRDATR- I agree. I think the rut is a good time for the youth to learn about hunting. Its the mostly lively time in nature lol.

Gonna be hard to stalk with kids, I'd suggest a blind over water. Where do you live?

I'm not sure if they plan to do a run of 270wsm at some point but Lapua just announced they will now be doing 300wsm this spring.

A buddy wanted a big 19th century looking hand forged knife for our reenactment troupe. Measures 15" with 1040 steel, bolsters, copper S guard and elk scales from a shed I picked up in unit 9. No edge ground yet but it's gonna be a razor. Thanks for looking.

Try to keep it all. If you can’t convince the boss to keep it then I’d keep my Dads and get rid of the newer stuff. we found a bunch of cast iron when my Dad passed. I reconditioned and shared with the kids. Most of it was his parents so really old.

Levi, Scooch and I set out for a mixed bag. Predators, ducks, quail were what we were after. On our second stand, I saw a coyote making its way down the draw on my sons side. He was set up with a standing tripod and my Marlin 60 in 22. I told him it was coming and to get ready. About a minute later, the coyote goes up the other side on a little hill, out of his view so I put it on his neck and send a 50 Ballistic Tip from my AR through him. Driving out we jumped a covey of Gambles and I dropped one, but we never recovered it. A few ponds later we had 4 ducks. A hen and drake buffelhead, a hen ringneck and a hen gadwall. Four ducks, four beautiful retrievals by my 18 month old Airedale... She's really getting the hang of this bird retrieval, as well as swimming for ducks! She's an absolute menace on dove, especially considering this was her first season and she's never had any formal training for that.
