I have long been intrigued by mesquite. It's my favorite wood to grill on and the prolific beans have piqued my interest for a long time. We have many mesquite trees in our yard including Chilean, Velvet, and Honey Mesquite. The Chilean provides an abundance of beans but they are bitter and not palatable to humans. The honey and velvet mesquites in my yard taste very good. The flavor varies from tree to tree and somewhat less from year to year. We finally committed to harvesting beans (from the tree, not off the ground) and after sun drying on trays took them to a Desert Harvesters grinding event. 4 - 5 gallon buckets processed to 9 lbs of flour. We made waffles and oatmeal cookies today. I am truly impressed by the flavor. What an abundant resource that is currently underutilized. If there is interest, I will follow up with a couple recipes.

You mean if you can’t shoot a bow, you won’t be able to archery hunt? What a crazy world.

    Had a few good mornings recently. Caught a 5-2, 4-4 and a 2-8 yesterday. Caught a 5-8, 3-13, 4-2 and a 2-6 last week. Two weeks ago got a 5-2, 4-10, two 4-7s, 3-10, 2-12 and a 2-10. Sorry about the upside down pics.

The zero tax stamp goes into effect on Jan 1, 2026. I know people that are going ahead and buying their suppressor and paying the 200, just to have their can for hunts this fall. A ultra lightweight 28 Nosler with a can might be worth an extra 200 to somebody...

Came up to Heber Wednesday, unloaded, and miracle of miracles, it started to sprinkle. Beautiful long 4 plus hours, almost. 1 /2” before it stopped. Thursday , repeat , but-not quite 1/4”. It’s been insanely dry up here, I stood in the rain until the temp went mid 50s, got “cool”. Today it hit 90 again. Black Canyon lake is all but dry. Pray for rain.

This is amazing. I didn't know that this niche existed. It's great to see this abundant resource being put to good use. I can only imagine the amount of labor involved being a deterrent to more people utilizing it. Long ago, I worked at a high-end Southwestern cuisine restaurant, and we utilized mesquite flour to dust meats before pan-searing. I always enjoyed the sweetness in the flour we used.

The stories in this thread explain why everyone should carry. I just met with an elderly lady in Tucson and I told her she should absolutely own a firearm based on our conversation. I told her one of my favorite phrases. When seconds matter the police are only minutes away.

Glass with binos on a tripod, in general imo this is probably the most important thing. Glass the burn up top, not sure if the leaves drop yet by your hunt pretty sure they will be down. Glass north facing slopes of all the fingers that drop off the west side. Check and see if the oaks have and are dropping acorns on those fingers. If they are that's a transition zone and a food source for deer dropping off the plateau for the winter. You will find deer this way for sure. Have good aim and make sure your shot counts. And here is the last most important thing. Come back and share your story with pictures. Have fun, can't wait to read how it went.

Be prepared logistically as well, as simple as that sounds. Bring an extra spare tire or two, gas cans, water, etc. spare rifle if you have it. It’s pretty remote and you lose a precious day or two trying to solve some of those things. Congrats on the tag!

Because they want it to be done by a specific kind of doctor. But I don’t think this group of people know what doctors could diagnose these kinds of conditions nor do I think the dept wants to be in the middle of lawsuits about requiring people with disabilities to visit doctors they would not need to visit otherwise for a signature for something that has nothing to do with their area of specialty. For instance, someone with a neurological condition may meet all of the other requirements but not be treated by an orthopedic surgeon, because their condition is primarily related to the nervous system. Under this proposal that person would need to visit a specialist who knows nothing about their condition, potentially obtaining a referral to do so (which would require another office visit and associated cost), providing medical history, and then helping them understand the process designated by AZGFD. Seems like an awful lot of burden to heap onto people who already have to deal with a lot just to prevent a few people from maintaining their CHAMP permit because they aren’t disabled enough. This whole thing just wreaks of jealousy and self-preservation.

Myself and 2 buddies decided to go rim to rim last weekend in preparation for Alaska Dall and Grizzly hunt. Weather was perfect and we did the 22 miles in 11 hours. My buddy Howard is 70 years old and crushed it. We went South Kaibab to North Kaibab. Absolutely recommend this hike!
